Wrexham got off to a winning start on a sunny afternoon at Bryan Estyn, in the first league fixture of the new season against a tough Rhyl team.
The first 15 minutes were all Wrexham with 2 try’s being scored by Hooker John Morton and loose head Will Sanderson, both conversions missed from difficult angles by Cillian Paget. A penalty kicked by Olly Dodd saw Wrexham in to a 13-0 lead.
Rhyl then started to come into the game helped by Wrexham’s indiscipline conceding numerous penalties.
Wrexham could have had another try towards the end of the first half but winger Matt Whiteley just failing to touch down in the corner.
The second half saw a yellow card for Rhyl which was shortly followed by a yellow card for Wrexham’s Ed Evans and a penalty try for Rhyl . Olly Dodd converted another penalty for Wrexham and then scored the try of the game with a cheeky chip over the defence and a 40m race to the try line. Score 21-7 to Wrexham.
The last 10 minutes of the game were edge of the seat stuff as Rhyl scored a try out wide and converted to bring the score to 21-14. Rhyl continued to press for another score but in the end Wrexham held out for a deserved but hard fought win.
